What to Look for When Hiring a Builder in Stratford-upon-Avon
27 May 2026
Choosing a builder is one of the most important decisions in any project — and the difference between a good and a bad experience often comes down to a few checks made before work starts. Here's what to look for.
Accreditations. Membership of bodies like the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) and registration with TrustMark (the government-endorsed quality scheme) show a builder has been vetted and holds themselves to a standard. They're a useful filter.
Proper insurance. A reputable builder carries public liability cover and, where they employ people, employer's liability cover. Ask to see it — it protects you as much as them.
References and real reviews. Ask to see recent, comparable work and speak to past clients. Genuine Google or Facebook reviews from named local customers are worth more than a wall of anonymous testimonials.
A clear, written quote. You want a detailed quote that sets out the scope, what's included and what isn't, and a realistic programme — not a vague figure scribbled on the back of a business card. It makes comparing builders fair and avoids disputes later.
Workmanship guarantees. A confident builder will put their guarantees in writing as part of the quote, so you know where you stand if something isn't right.
Local knowledge. A builder who knows the area — the housing stock, the local planning quirks, the way period properties around Stratford need handling — is more likely to get it right first time.
